Possibly, if you can remember which version was compatible. I would not advise it, as WPSOLR releases also bring security fixes.

I just don’t know what it is going to take to upgrade to version 9 solr engine, but our search is down. I restored the WP SOLR plugin from 6/29, but it is giving the same error results. Would I have to do anything else to roll back the update?

No, it should be enough.

You can try to create a hosted Solr index with a free trial OpenSolr while you look to restore your current search.
