Recombee is an AI recommender that offers many models for personalized search and recommendations. Some of them are “similar”, “popular” or “personal” (based on the users preferences). But one that is severly underrated is the “visually similar” model which uses AI to recommend similar items not based on their content but on the appearance of their featured image.

Why use visually similar recommendations ?
When browsing for products, the first thing we notice are the thumbnails. Recommending items with similar images, not only based on the content of the image but how it is displayed, can then improve conversion rates.
If we look at the screenshot above we can see that this product (laptop) probably caught the eye of the user since it is in an appealing front facing position. Since the user has clicked on this product, we can deduce that the user will be more inclined on clicking on products which feature front-facing laptops. Whereas on the right, we have recommendations based on the content of the product, not the thumbnail. None of these options feature a front-facing laptop so the user will probably be less interested in them.
