Greetings,
We are using WP Solr and Bonsai (OpenSearch) and using fuzzy search option.

Now in this scenario if we search multiple words like “black faucet” it works where total word count is more than 9 characters but one word is not more than 9 characters.

If we search the word like “deckplate” 8 characters it works.

If we search the word like “panasonic” or “waterstone” it does not work as it is more than 9 characters. If we search word like “panason” it works. This issue is only with fuzzy option.

we are forced to us fuzzy option as user do not search with exact SKU for example if a product SKU is “K1239807” sometime user does not enter first character like “k” and enters “1239807” and it works perfectly with fuzzy.

It is difficult to understand why each world should be less than 9 characters for the fuzzy operator. I checked in the Lucene documentation, but it is no mentioned.

You could perhaps avoid fuzziness with a little trick (and better search speed and scalability):
when you index your SKU, add the SKU without the first letter. For instance, index SKU array with ['K1239807', '1239807'].

That is exactly what we have noticed when we turn on fuzziness. Maybe it is a bug with Lucerne. Surprisingly it works for every word which is up to 9 characters and then it stops if the word is more than 9 characters. In your test environment can you please try and see if you have fuzzy enabled and search where search string is 10 or 11 character single word.

The workaround to avoid fuzziness I will discuss with stakeholders and come back but removing first starting character was just an example. If we omit 2,3,4 starting characters we might have to do something like this [‘K1239807’, ‘1239807’,’239807′,39807′,’9807′]. Will there be any issue with that?

You can activate the query monitor add-on that will show you the exact Opensearch query syntax used.
You can then execute/tweak the query in your Opensearch dashboard.

Fuzzy is limited to 2 characters. Using the “contains” operator instead in 2.1 with this fix should give you results on longer missing prefixes.
On the other hand, fuzzy currently works on all fields

You can copy the query and modify the fuzzy part (panasonic~1) in Opensearch dashboards to verify if Opensearch is limited to 9 characters with fuzziness.

That said, there’s an additional wrinkle here: WP Solr itself disables fuzzy matching for single-word queries longer than 8 characters. That’s actually what’s happening in this case. When you search for “Panasonic” (9 characters), WP Solr skips fuzzy logic entirely. But when you search for “Panasoni” (8 characters), it allows fuzzy matching, and you get results. This is a performance optimization built into WP Solr to avoid overly expensive queries on long terms.

So the good news is this isn’t a Bonsai bug: it’s expected behavior based on WP Solr’s query rules and how fuzzy matching works under the hood.

That said, there are a few things you can try to improve it:

1. Explicitly set fuzziness: 2 in your query instead of relying on "AUTO"
2. Add a keyword match on fields like brand_str alongside fuzzy search
3. Use edge n-grams or custom analyzers that tokenize brand names more effectively
4. Run queries with explain=true to see exactly why a match is (or isn’t) happening

It is not possible to tweak queries or fuzziness. It would not work anyway, as the apparent 9 character limits is inside Lucene.

You can fall back to my initial suggestion:

You could perhaps avoid fuzziness with a little trick (and better search speed and scalability):
when you index your SKU, add the SKU without the first letter. For instance, index SKU array with [‘K1239807’, ‘1239807’].
