Products in child categories

Just looking for some clarification here.
It appears that if, on the top-level (say for example /shop) of the hierarchy that if you want the number of records/products that are found in all the children to be reflected in the count (or have products listed or have the list of facets sorted by the true number of records in all children)…that you have to add all products to all of their respective parents?
Is this true?
No problem if so, just looking for clarification before I make such a change. I ask because the default categories widget that is typically placed in the Shop Sidebar doesn’t behave this way and accurately shows products from all children.
