The shortcode is deprecated.

Please select your theme’s search template on screen 2.1 instead. Also select the archive pages that you want to replace the search with OpenSearch (search, taxonomies, tags, …).

Yes, unless your theme does not use standard search archive /?s

(some themes define a custom, non archive, search page like /my-search)

Did you create the OpenSearch index from the WPSOLR admin? Or did it exist before?

It is not possible. You need to create the index from WPSOLR’s plugin, then index it, then search it.

The error message mentions that field “autocomplete” is not defined in your index.

But this field is defined in the mappings definition used to create your index from WPSOLR plugin, /plugins/wpsolr-pro/wpsolr-pro/wpsolr/core/classes/engines/opensearch_php/wpsolr_index_1_0.json

You could try to create a new OpenSolr index from WPSOLR plugin, index it, and select it in screen 2.1 as your default search index.
